결성 초기인 1969년부터 1970년까지는 대디라는 밴드명을 사용하였다. 1969년 네덜란드의 한 백만장자가 이들을 재정적으로 지원해주고 리처드 데이비스, 리차드 파머, 로저 호드슨, 밥 밀러가 원년 멤버로서 출발하게 된다.
초기의 작품들은 난해하고 모호한 가사로 가득 한 전형적인 프로그 음악을 보여주나 상업적으로나 비평적으로 큰 주목을 받지 못한다. 이후 이들은 음악적 방향을 전향하여 대중성이 가미된 편한 음악을 선보이게 된다.
슈퍼트램프가 국제적으로 큰 명성을 얻은 앨범은 5번째 판인 Even In The QuieTest Moments...인데 Fool's Overture가 대표곡으로 손꼽힌다.
이들의 최고 명반으로 꼽히는 Breakfast in America은 무려 2천만장이나 나가면서[1][2] 미국 빌보드 차트에 6주간 1위에 오르는 등 세계적인 대박을 거둔다.
1988년을 마지막으로 1기 활동을 멈추고 휴지기 이후 복귀를 반복하며 세계적으로 공연 투어에 나서고 있다.
