1436년(세종 18) 조선시대 최초의 납활자인 병진자로 간행된 자치통감 강목을 후대에 번각하여 재간행한 책으로 보입니다. 병진자는 크기 2.0×2.5 cm. 《자치통감강목훈의(資治通鑑綱目訓義)》를 인출(印出)할 때 강자(綱字:큰자)로 쓰기 위해 수양대군(首陽大君) 유(瑈)에게 글을 쓰게 하여 이를 자본(字本)삼아 납으로 주자(鑄字)한 것입니다. 활자를 만든 해가 병진년(1436년)이어서 병진자라 합니다. 병진자는 《자치통감강목훈의》를 찍어내기 위해 만들었기 때문에 이 《강목》 이외에는 다른 간행본이 나타나지 않고 있으며 초인본(初印本)은 그 자체가 매우 정교하고, 상하의 흑어미(黑魚尾)가 하향한 것이 특징입니다.
