1955년 미국 펜실베이니아 주 마운트 플리젠트에서 태어났다. 처음 학교에 입학 했을 때 잭 갠토스는 글을 잘 읽지 못했다. 열네 살 때 누나의 일기를 보고 자기라면 좀 더 잘 쓸 수 있다고 생각해서 작가가 되기로 결심한 뒤 학교에서 일어나는 일들을 메모하기 시작했다. 잭 갠토스는 어린이부터 어른에 이르기까지 폭 넓은 독자를 상대로 글을 쓰며 유머 속에 감동을 녹여 낸다는 평을 받고 잇다. 이 책은 미국 도서관 협회에서 '주목할 만한 어린이 책'으로, 스쿨 라이브러리 저널에서 '올해의 책'으로 선정되었다. 갠토스는 후속 작품 <조이, 이성을 잃다>로 2001년 뉴베리 명예상을 받기도 했다. 지금은 가족과 함께 매사추세츠 주 보스턴에 살며 대학에서 어린이 문학을 가르친다. 지은 책으로는 그림책 <심술쟁이 고양이 랄프>시리즈와 자전 소설 <잭 헨리>시리즈 등이 있다.
