1981년 우드랜드 패턴이 미군 전군에 적용되고 1981~84년 사이에 나온 초기형 BDU 입니다. 코튼50 나일론50 소재의 트윌 코튼으로 빈티지한 느낌이 강하며 초기형의 가장 큰 특징은 와이드 칼라입니다. 중기형, 후기형의 짧은 칼라와는 다르게 드레시한 느낌이 있습니다. 이게 상당히 매력적인 포인트입니다. 허리에 어드저스트가 달린 걸 초기형이라 하는 경우가 있는데 그건 중기형입니다.
